Our Pathways

Our children have different needs. We therefore organise teaching & learning into pathways to enable staff to focus on what matters to our students rather than assume a 'one size fits all' approach.  EHCPs underpin everything we do, and our pathways reflect the requirements of special educational provision to meet individual need.

EYFS: We are 2-5 years old and in the Early Years Foundation Stage, mostly known as Nursey or Reception, learning and developing through the requirements of the statutory framework for the EYFS. If we are in Reception, we will have an EHCP and will follow a pathway that is suited to our individual needs. Most of us are based at our nursery site and many of us will continue our learning into Reception at a mainstream primary school.

Pre-formal: We are children and young people who are learning at an early developmental stage. We are on the Engagement Model. We require high levels of adult support to ensure our personal and educational needs are met.

Semi-formalWe are children and young people beginning to develop skills and knowledge. We are learning at an informal stage, and we require adult support in all areas of learning. We require the teaching of self-help, independence and social skills. We are working consistently at or below the earliest reaches of the National Curriculum.

Formal: We are children and young people are developing subject-specific knowledge and skills. We are learning at a formal stage, and we require adult support in most areas of learning. We may require adult support in the learning of self-regulation.

Post 16: We are young people preparing for adulthood developing functional, life and/or employability skills. We are learning in different ways and we may still follow the approach of our previous pathway to ensure we access appropriate age and stage content, challenge and specialist provision. We are based at either Main Site or Chesterfield in our post 16 provisions.
